Our History

United Insurance Counselors (UIC) was established in 1872 by WH Snider. Over the next 100 years the firm saw a couple different owners before being purchased by Joe Kellenberger in 1995. In 2003, Joe’s son – Tom Kellenberger – followed in his father’s footsteps by joining the firm and pursuing a career in insurance. After 7 years at UIC, Tom purchased the firm from his father in 2010.

Tom spent the next 8 years growing the firm and building its presence in the Quad Cities area. In 2018, Tom made the decision to partner with First MainStreet Insurance in order to bring additional resources to UIC’s client community. First MainStreet Insurance L.C. (FMSI), headquartered in Cedar Rapids, IA, is an organization that was established in 2017 when likeminded individuals recognized the value for sustaining the small town insurance agency and its local legacy. The FMSI model focuses on smaller agencies, a lot of them family-run organizations, to perpetuate their business while giving them access to robust resources and carrier markets to better service their clients.

With the support of FMSI, United Insurance Counselors gained additional carrier and market resources to further their best-in-class service. The firm’s day-to-day operations continue to be managed by local owner, Tom Kellenberger, maintaining the firm’s local presence and activity in the community while providing the attention clients expect from a local agent.
